How To Pay For Million-Dollar Cures

An Bloomberg Opinion article by Lisa Jarvis highlights the economic challenges of paying for new cell and gene therapies. Given the cost of development and, more importantly, the cost of goods, these therapies are necessarily expensive, and will be for a long time. New financial engineering solutions, which she writes about, are hardly going to solve the problem – someone will pay the cost. And government intervention is a long way off.

In a presentation designed to make people stop and think, Jeff Berkowitz outlined how a sophisticated understanding of market access is key to commercial success for biotechs. "You can do great science and great medicine - and still lose your shirt," he told the audience. Far from being a "gloomy gus," he also gave concrete advice about what to do in an environment where payers have more leverage. Key actions: ensure market access is appropriately resourced and that CEOs and leadership teams are accountable for it.
